Global Student Entrepreneur Awards Finals on November 17-19

Lincoln Center Institute (LCI) believes, as we state in Findings of the Imagination Conversations, that hands-on projects and real-world challenges ignite students’ imaginations. The nonprofit Entrepreneurs’ Organization understands this, too. It produces the annual Global Student Entrepreneur Awards (GSEA), which encourage young people to do innovative work. The 2011 GSEA Global Finals will take place at the New York Stock Exchange on November 17-19, as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week.

The GSEA is open to all students who attend a high school, college, or university and own a for-profit business that has been generating revenue for at least six months. Nominees compete around the world, making presentations about their companies to business-leader judges. Winners at the regional and national levels face off at the Global Finals. Last year’s Global Student Entrepreneur of the Year was Texas Christian University’s Brent Skoda, founder of CollegeFitness.com.

This week’s event will include the announcement of the 2011 first prize winner and runners-up, as well as the recipients of the Innovation Award, Lessons from the Edge Award, and Social Impact Award. There are also special honors for a high school student and a graduate student. The awardees will share over $150,000 in cash and donated business services, not to mention substantial media exposure that will increase the profile of their companies.

LCI looks forward to learning about the budding entrepreneurs who come out on top this year—we’ll report on them here. The GSEA is an impressive example of an initiative that animates and spotlights the imagination, creativity, and innovation of young people.
